Are Android tablets worth it?

It might seem like Apple has the tablet market cornered, and while the iPad is still dominant, gone are the days when that was your only viable option. Android tablets have become much better in recent years, and they’re a particularly good iPad alternative if you find the price of Apple’s tablet offerings to be a little steep (although the 10.2-inch iPad is a great value, admittedly). A tablet running the Android operating system also offers some obvious benefits if you also own an Android smartphone since your tablet and phone will share a common app ecosystem.
You still need to do some due diligence when shopping for Android tablet deals, though. Unlike iPads, which are made only by Apple, there are a ton of different brands cranking out cheap Android tablets that litter sites like Amazon — and there are plenty of Android tablets you shouldn’t buy. Instead, stick with name brands like Samsung, Lenovo, and other trusted hardware makers that have an established reputation.
However, if you’re shopping for Android tablet deals on the tightest of budgets, you do have some cheap options worth considering. Amazon’s Fire tablets are chief among these: Although they technically run on the proprietary Fire OS (which is Android-based) instead of the standard Android mobile operating system, they still share many apps. Amazon can also afford to make these things so cheap by monetizing Prime content through them. That’s good news for anybody who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money, and in our opinion, the Amazon Fire devices are the only truly cheap Android tablets worth your cash.
If you can stretch your budget a bit, then the field opens up to more premium name-brand tablets. Samsung easily takes the crown here, offering the best Android tablets in its Galaxy Tab S devices (the Galaxy Tab S7+ being one of our current favorites). The Galaxy Tab A models are budget-conscious alternatives to the pricier S line if you’re after cheap Android tablets. The Lenovo Tab series also represents a very solid value, and certain models like the Tab M10 Plus come with a handy Alexa-enabled speaker dock that lets you use the tablet as a smart home display when you’re not taking it on the go.
An interesting newcomer to the Android tablet scene is the Google Pixel Slate, a spinoff of the software company’s hugely successful Pixel line of smartphones. The 12.3-inch Pixel Slate actually runs on Chrome OS, so it’s not technically an Android tablet per se, but more like a touchscreen Chromebook — something that becomes much more apparent when the Slate is paired with a keyboard case that effectively turns it into a superslim 2-in-1. Nonetheless, Chrome OS now works with many Android apps (Google is the name behind both software environments, after all), which makes the Pixel Slate a worthy consideration if you’re looking for Android tablet deals on something with more laptoplike hardware and functionality.

iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 12

The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max represent Apple’s 2019 flagship lineup. In keeping with its recent release strategy, Apple rolled out three devices: The 6.1-inch iPhone 11 is the standard and most budget-friendly flagship, the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro is the premium (and slightly smaller) model, and the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max is the up-sized version of the Pro and the most expensive of the bunch. All three phones run on the A13 Bionic chip, with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max featuring an upgraded camera module, better displays, and extra storage options.
In 2020, Apple shook things up a bit by dropping four new devices: The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The biggest difference between this release and the previous one was the addition of the pocket-sized 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini, no doubt spurred on by the warm reception that the 4.7-inch second-gen 2020 iPhone SE received among people who have been clamoring for smaller phones (despite having a larger display, the iPhone 12 Mini is about the same size overall as the iPhone SE thanks to its slimmed-down bezels).
All iPhone 12 models pack Apple’s latest A14 Bionic chip, and like the iPhone 11 lineup, the differences between models boil down to size, cameras, displays, and storage capacity (with the more expensive Pro models boasting some upgrades over the standard 12 and 12 Mini). Along with a faster processor, the iPhone 12 lineup features higher resolution touchscreens and improved camera modules over the iPhone 11 models. The iPhone 12 is slightly smaller and lighter than the iPhone 11 overall, but owing to its trimmer bezels, it sports the same 6.1-inch screen size. The iPhone 12’s superior OLED display has a higher resolution, however, at 2,532 x 1,170 pixels (460 pixels per inch) in contrast to the iPhone 11 LCD display’s 1,792 x 828 resolution (326 pixels per inch).
The iPhone 12 also improves upon the iPhone 11’s camera module with a new ultrawide lens but retails for $799 whereas the iPhone 11 launched with an MSRP of $699. If you’re struggling to choose between the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 and their variants then you’ll have to decide if those upgrades are worth the premium you’ll pay. There are naturally going to be more (and better) iPhone 11 deals out there right now given that it’s a last-gen device and the iPhone 12 only recently hit the market. If cost is your primary concern, you want a premium flagship on a budget, and you aren’t picky about the latest and greatest features, the iPhone 11 is an easy choice.
The waters get a little murkier if you’re deciding between the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro, as the 11 Pro and Pro Max are still fairly expensive in 2020 — and if you’re paying extra because you want the high-end model, it might be worth it to splurge on one of the new and improved devices (or even the standard iPhone 12). On the other hand, the performance gap between the iPhone 11 Pro and 12 Pro isn’t as large as that of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11: Both are about the same overall size and weight and both feature Super Retina OLED displays, although thinner bezels mean that the iPhone 12 Pro’s 2,532 x 1,170 460 ppi screen sits at 6.1 inches in contrast to the iPhone 11 Pro’s 2,436 x 1,125 pixels 458ppi display which measures 5.8 inches.
Both the iPhone 11 Pro and 12 Pro also come loaded with the same amount of RAM, the same storage options, and very similar camera modules, the primary difference under the hood being the new A14 Bionic chip versus the last-gen A13 Bionic processor. Both are highly capable phones with launch prices of $999; in our opinion, the best choice for you will boil down to which one is the better bargain. The plethora of iPhone 11 deals up for grabs right now tips the needle in the direction of the 2019 flagship.

The Fitbit Versa gets its name from its versatility and is a great alternative to the Apple Watch (it resembles it in design, too!). At a reasonable price, you’re getting all the smartwatch functionality you need for both smartwatch and fitness tracking uses.
While you won’t have a vast selection of apps like the Apple Watch has, Fitbit’s proprietary OS brings all the notifications and fitness data you’ll ever need right to your wrist in an easy to navigate user interface. Android users can also take calls directly from the watch and send quick text replies, too. If you want, you can even load up to 300 songs right to the Versa using either the preloaded music apps or downloading them directly to the watch itself.
The Versa can track all kinds of workouts from running to biking, weights, swimming, interval training, and full-body exercises either manually or automatically. An on-watch coaching app guides you through preformatted workouts, and the watch logs information on your distance traveled as well as calories, steps, and heart rate. In our opinion, it’s the best Fitbit available. While there is a new version of the Fitbit Versa out, we think the original version will be more than enough for most users.
Fitbit Charge 3

Unlike the Fitbit Versa, the Fitbit Charge 3 is more fitness tracking-centric versus functioning as a smartwatch. Navigation of the Charge 3 is done through the touchscreen, which provides you the basics on steps taken, calories burnt, floors climbed, distance, and heart rate information. An integrated SPO2 sensor measures blood oxygen levels and analyzes your sleeping patterns.
The Charge 3 can display a host of notifications, including calls, texts, app alerts, and music playback, with Android users gaining the capability to send quick replies. Another great feature of the Fitbit Charge 3 is its long battery life: In our tests, we were getting up to a week’s worth on just a single charge.
Fitbit Inspire

If you don’t need a smartwatch and are just looking for a basic fitness tracker at a great price, the affordable Fitbit Inspire is certainly it. There are two versions of this particular Fitbit: the Inspire, which we’re recommending here, and the Fitbit Inspire HR, which adds heart rate tracking. Unless you’re doing fitness activities where knowing your heart rate is useful like running or jogging, save yourself some money by picking up the cheaper standard Inspire.
Even without the heart rate monitoring functionality, you’ll still be able to monitor steps, distance, hourly activity, active minutes and calories burned, and track your sleep (it can even wake you up by lightly vibrating your wrist). You’ll still get the automatic tracking that more expensive Fitbits have, and impressive battery life of up to five days on a single charge.
Fitbit Ionic

The Fitbit Ionic is one of Fitbit’s oldest smartwatch models, but it is by no means lacking in functionality as a result. In addition to the fitness tracking capabilities that you’d expect out from Fitbit, you’ll get all the creature comforts of modern smartwatches, including a dedicated app store, NFC tap-to-pay, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. Add to this built-in GPS with GLONASS, and we’d argue that the distance tracking with the Ionic is by far the best of any of the Fitbit models.
Speaking of that fitness tracking, you’ll get continuous monitoring of steps, heart rate, sleep patterns, stairs climbed, and burned calories. The Ionic supports customizable exercise routines as well as automatic detecting of various workouts, so you never forget to track, and on-watch coaching through multiple workouts and activities.
While the Ionic is a fitness tracker first, the smartwatch functionality lets you use various apps just like you would on an Android Wear or Apple Watch. Like the Versa, it has dedicated storage for music, which you can add either manually or access through a variety of music apps.
How to choose a Fitbit
With quite a few models to choose from, it can be confusing as to which model to select. So let’s look at each one with our recommendations for who they might be useful for.
If you’re looking for basic activity tracking, the Fitbit Inspire is great as it checks all the boxes for what a good activity tracker needs. If you don’t need (or want) a smartwatch, this is the one to pick. However, we’d recommend stepping up to the Inspire HR if your workouts involve watching your heart rate: the basic model doesn’t offer that.
Those wanting a little more smartwatch functionality as well as more accurate and comprehensive activity and fitness tracking, the Charge 3 is a better option. This is also the cheapest Fitbit that offers connectivity with your smartphone to display notifications, and if you’re using an Android device, to send quick replies.
Next up is the Fitbit Versa, which we’re big fans of because of its smartwatch-like functionality. You’ll be able to answer calls and send quick replies from this particular watch, and a host of preloaded apps will allow you to use it much like a traditional smartwatch. However, you’re limited to what apps Fitbit includes.
For those that want flexibility in what apps they use, then step up to the top of the line Ionic. As we mentioned, it has its dedicated app store, and with NFC, built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, it is by far one of the most smartwatch-like offerings from Fitbit right now.

LG runs a profitable 6G THz outside transmission check

LG Electronics has announced a successful short-range test for 6G terahertz (THz) data, bringing the eventual 6G future that much closer.
LG worked in conjunction with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research laboratory in Germany to conduct the test, which saw the data transmitted wirelessly between the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and the Berlin Institute of Technology. It successfully traveled over 100 meters in an outdoor setting, which breaks records that were previously set under controlled laboratory conditions.
LG did not specify what the data was, how much was transmitted, or how long it took, but previous 6G transmission tests have achieved 48GB-per-second speeds. (Pulling down a full digital installation of Microsoft Flight Simulator in under three seconds? Sure, I’ll take that.)
Pulling off a short-range data transmission may not sound that impressive at the moment, with 5G still on the horizon, but LG’s transmission test is a new milestone for 6G, which is still in its relative infancy. Previous tests have shown that in theory, 6G could be as much as a hundred times faster than 5G, but it’s currently limited by its short-range and high power requirements.
LG and its German collaborators were able to boost the 6G signal’s transmission distance by codeveloping a new kind of power amplifier that uses adaptive beamforming technology — which uses signals from an array of transmitters in order to increase their strength — to boost 6G output. LG was testing a lot of new tech here, all at once, and it seems to have worked out.
“The success of this test demonstrates that we are ever closer to the successful application of terahertz radio communication spectrum in the upcoming 6G era,” said I.P. Park, the president of LG, in a prepared release.
Again, this is a step along the road to a full-fledged 6G rollout, which is generally planned for the future but still doesn’t have a firm release date. LG claims in its press release to have targeted 2025 for global 6G standardization, with commercialization to come over the course of the following four years, but that seems to be one of the more optimistic forecasts to date.
In other words, it’s probably not worth waiting for 6G instead of upgrading to a 5G-capable phone.

Google discontinues Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G after Pixel 5a launch

Google has discontinued the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G barely 10 months after launch, the company confirmed this week. While eagle-eyed observers had noticed fluctuating stock levels on both Pixels globally, Google had yet to officially weigh in one way or the other until now.
“With our current forecasts, we expect Google Store in the U.S. to sell out of Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 in the coming weeks following the launch of Pixel 5a (5G). The Pixel 5a (5G) is a great option for customers and delivers valuable hardware upgrades compared to the Pixel 4a (5G), all at a lower price point,” a Google spokesperson confirmed to Digital Trends. This will also apply to non-U.S. markets, with UK vendors like Carphone Warehouse and John Lewis no longer stocking the older Pixels. The older Pixel 4a remains on sale as a low-cost Pixel option.
While the Pixel 5a 5G offers many of the same features you’ll find in the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, with the IP67 rating and metal body offering durability boosts over the 4a 5G and the larger battery adding staying power over the 5, it’s not going to be an option in international markets. Google has explicitly limited the Pixel 5a 5G to the U.S. and Japan.
This means once the current crop of Pixels sells out, your only hope for a 5G Pixel would be the premium-priced Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. While it seems counterintuitive for Google to drop its Pixels without even releasing the next batch, it makes a bit of sense. The reason for the Pixel 5a 5G’s limited launch is due to a chip shortage affecting the Snapdragon 765 which powers both older Pixels. If Google can’t secure enough chips to launch the new 5a 5G widely, it certainly can’t secure enough to keep two older devices on the shelves.
Fortunately, users in international markets won’t suffer a dearth of cheap Android phones as evidenced by phones like the Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G, the OnePlus Nord 2, Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Lite 5G, and so many others. With Google having covered two markets that are typically neglected by Chinese phones, what appeared to be a puzzling decision makes a lot of sense in hindsight.

“iPad” has become almost a generic term for “tablet,” a testament to the massive enduring popularity of these Apple devices. That’s no surprise, given that Apple is the company that pretty much put tablets on the map when it rolled out its first iPad almost a decade ago (2020 will mark the 10th anniversary of the original model). Part of this popularity is also due to their value: With the exception of the iPad Pro, iPads are not as pricey as things like iPhones and MacBooks when compared to the competition.
The standard iPad (now in its seventh generation) is remarkably affordable and remains our most recommended tablet for most people. However, don’t overlook the excellent new iPad Air, which gives the more expensive iPad Pro a serious run for its money, as well as the iPad Mini, which is a tremendous super-portable tablet if you don’t mind sacrificing screen real estate.
The iPad Pro, of course, is the most high-end model in Apple’s tablet stable. It’s expensive, but there’s no denying that it’s Apple’s best tablet, so you’ll have to decide for yourself if the extra juice is worth the squeeze. Samsung Galaxy Tab

There are several Android tablet brands on the market today, but as with Android smartphones, Samsung is the biggest name on the playing field. Its Galaxy Tab devices represent the best Android tablets that money can buy in 2019, and like the iPad line, these devices cover a wide range of price points and features.
The Galaxy Tab S-series bears a similar moniker to the Galaxy S phones and occupies much the same space in Samsung’s product line as the company’s flagship tablets. The current-gen Galaxy Tab S6 is great, but it’s also the most expensive Tab model (typically priced somewhere in-between the iPad Pro and iPad Air). Nonetheless, if you’re looking for an Android tablet to pair with a keyboard, the Tab S6 is perfect.
If you’re looking for a more value-priced option, though, then the Galaxy Tab S5e is a great alternative and another one of our favorites. Samsung makes some even cheaper ones as well, such as the Galaxy Tab A — but if you’re looking for a genuinely budget-minded tablet, then you might want to consider opting for one of Amazon’s Fire devices instead.
Amazon Fire

Amazon’s Fire tablets (formerly part of the Kindle line, although they no longer bear that moniker) have come a long way in recent years. We weren’t die-hard fans of them originally, but for the price, they are are hard to beat today. That’s especially true for Prime members who want to take advantage of everything that their Prime subscription offers, such as Prime Video, Prime Music, Audible audiobooks, free e-books and magazines, and the myriad of other stuff Amazon gives its premium customers.
And of course, since they’re tablets, the Fire devices also put a myriad of apps, games, and other software at your fingertips. Did we mention they’re cheap? The seven-inch Fire 7 starts at just $50, the eight-inch Fire HD 8 (with high-definition display) at $90, and the new Fire HD 10 at $190 — and no, those aren’t just sale prices. Even if the currently available tablet deals don’t feature any discounts on Fire devices at the moment, these are still great buys at their regular prices, but be sure to check back often as Amazon marks these down from time to time. Several years ago, we saw the launch of not two but three new flagship mobile devices from the fruit-themed tech giant when the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus dropped alongside the iPhone X as the traditional successor to the previous iPhone.
Under the hood, the iPhone 8 isn’t radically different than the X. It boasts the same 2.39 Hexa-core processor, although the standard wireless iPhone 8 only utilizes 2GB of RAM compared to the X’s 3GB (the larger iPhone 8 Plus features the full 3GB). It also performs similarly to the iPhone X when it comes to its excellent camera and speedy wireless charging, akin to the newer Galaxy phones. Since the battery life is also more or less the same, the main differences between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X are the bezels, screen sizes, and a touch screen home button, but you can still get both in that classic Space Gray color you know and love.
Although its more traditional design isn’t as groundbreaking as iPhones of the past, the iPhone 8 still delivers the solid build quality and performance we’ve come to expect. With a starting retail price of $699 for this iPhone and a $799 price tag for the iPhone 8 Plus, it wasn’t quite as pricey as the X, and you can find it for a lot cheaper now. If you’re looking for a great phone but don’t feel like making monthly payments to upgrade to the newest model, you can save some cash with ongoing iPhone 8 deals.
iPhone X

Speaking of fashionable tech, the high-end iPhone X turned heads (and caused more than its share of sticker shock) when the new line was announced in fall 2017. Marketed as something of a luxury item yet conspicuously lacking a 3.5mm headphone jack, the iPhone X perhaps uniquely represents the reason behind the “love it or hate it” attitudes that Apple inspires among the masses. But with an improved battery, iOS 11, a slo-mo camera, Face ID, and wireless connectivity for AirPods, it was one of the best iPhones you could buy at the time.
And despite its high initial cost, the iPhone X is a great piece of technology with an incredible edge-to-edge OLED touch display, a fantastic front camera, and lightning-fast speed thanks to its snappy 2.39 GHz Hexa-core processor and 3GB of RAM. It also features wireless charging capability, finally bringing the iPhones up to speed with their Android competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC. With all of that screen space for your iPhone apps to fit in, the X is something to behold — though you may need to get a new pair of compatible wireless headphones.
The iPhone X is a high-end phone with a price tag to match. It retailed for an upfront cost of $999 upon its pre-order launch, which made it the most expensive new iPhone yet, but don’t worry: Ongoing iPhone discounts can save you a nice chunk of change on the iPhone X now that it’s a few years old. You can even find some great refurbished models for even less.
iPhone XS, XR, and XS Max

The iPhone XS and XS Max were Apple’s flagships for 2018, and honestly, not much changed between the iPhone X and the iPhone XS. The launch price was still right around $1,000, too. If you’re looking to buy the latest tech from Apple, you can grab one of the iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 models right now, but deals on newer stuff are always few and far between; since the iPhone XS and XS Max are two years old now, today’s not a bad time to start hunting for deals on these.
The iPhone XS launched with a sticker price of $999, but Apple also rolled out a more budget-friendly alternative in the iPhone XR which retailed for $749. The iPhone XS Max, for its part, was one of the best plus-sized phone the company has ever released. You can definitely find some pretty big price cuts on these floating around out there if you know where to look. We’ve been scouring the web for the latest discounts, and we will be continually updating this page as the savings continue to roll in.
iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max

The iPhone 11 Pro brought another generation of improvements across the board, from increased battery life to a crisper, more vivid screen, and, of course, more raw horsepower from the onboard processor. In particular, Apple focused on the new camera module, bringing a three-camera setup that delivers snappy autofocus, great depth of field, and an incredible level of image fidelity. This system also offers new shooting modes thanks to its wide-angle lens (something that was curiously absent from the new Google Pixel 4).
The different models of the iPhone 11 feature varying screen sizes and building materials, and the numbering scheme can be a little confusing (although it’s arguably more consistent than previous releases): The iPhone 11 is the more budget-friendly alternative to the Pro models, sporting a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina HD display with a 1,792 x 828 resolution, while the 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch Super Retina XDR touchscreen at 2,436 x 1,125 pixels. Meanwhile, the superb iPhone 11 Pro Max is fitted with a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display with a 2,688 x 1,242 resolution. The iPhone 11 takes after previous iPhones with an aluminum and glass body, while the Pro and Pro Max boast a gorgeous brushed steel aesthetic.
Depending on storage options, the iPhone 11 retailed for $699, while the 11 Pro started at $999 and the 11 Pro Max at $1,099.
iPhone SE (Second Generation)

If the ever-growing price tags and screen sizes of flagship iPhones have you down, you’re not alone. Last year, Apple heeded the cries of fans and finally brought back the beloved iPhone SE, which is an excellent mid-range alternative to the much pricier flagships. The new second-gen SE boasts a 4.7-inch Retina display (a bit bigger than the four-inch display of the original SE, but still a nice pocket-friendly size) and packs the same internal processor as the much more expensive iPhone 11. You read that right: The iPhone SE runs on the same awesome A13 Bionic chipset as the current-gen flagships that cost nearly twice as much.
That alone isn’t super shocking. What should really grab your attention is the iPhone SE’s retail price of just $400. That’s an incredible value for a brand new Apple mobile, and there are already iPhone deals and carrier offers available for the second-gen SE that make it an even better buy. If you want an iPhone and don’t want to pay flagship prices (or buy refurbished), the iPhone SE is an easy choice.
iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max

Last year was a bit of an odd one for Apple, which has released not three, not even four, but five new smartphones. In early 2020 we got the new iPhone SE (which is technically part of the iPhone 11 generation as it runs on the same A13 Bionic chip), and in October, Apple rolled out four new next-gen devices: The iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. It goes without saying that if you’re in the market for a new Apple handset, 2020 has given you more options to choose from than any year before.
Having many choices can be a good thing, but it can also induce decision paralysis if you don’t already have a reasonably specific idea of what you want. To make things simpler, you can break down the four models into two categories: The iPhone 12 and 12 Mini are the standard flagships, while the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are the premium models. With its 5.4-inch display, the Mini is the obvious choice for those who like smaller phones (which are clearly making a comeback) but who want something with more modern styling than the iPhone SE. It’s worth noting that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini has similar overall dimensions as the 4.7-inch iPhone SE given the 12 Mini’s much slimmer bezels.
The standard iPhone 12 5G and iPhone 12 Pro are the same size with 6.1-inch displays, while the aptly named iPhone 12 Pro max sits at 6.7 inches (the obvious choice for those who don’t buck the trend of bigger smartphones). All of the iPhone 12 models run on the new A14 Bionic chip, but the Pro models boast some upgrades over the standard flagships including increased RAM, bigger storage options, and enhanced camera modules. More than ten years after their inception, Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones still command the lion’s share of the Android smartphone market and could arguably be considered Apple’s main competition worldwide (although Apple currently enjoys a larger market share in the U.S. than all Android phone brands combined). As you probably inferred from the name, the 2019 Galaxy S10 phones represent the tenth generation of Samsung’s main flagship line, but Samsung got in the spirit of 2020 when it rolled out the new S-series flagship — dubbed the Galaxy S20 — at its February Galaxy Unpacked event. The Galaxy family also features the Note smartphones that occupy kind of a weird space as alternative flagships featuring larger displays and included stylus pens, and we were more impressed with the new Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra than with the S-series devices. Samsung also recently revealed the unique Galaxy Z Flip, a new spin on the old flip-phone concept, along with the larger (almost iPad Mini-like when in use) Samsung Galaxy Fold.
As far as the new 2021 offerings go, the release strategy hasn’t changed much from last year with three next-generation Galaxy devices to choose from: The Galaxy S21, the larger Galaxy S21 Plus, and the premium Galaxy S21 Ultra (which is far and away our favorite of the bunch). They’re all solid phones as you’d expect, although the Samsung didn’t exactly re-invent the wheel. Your best bet when looking for a deal on new releases like these is to take advantage of the carrier offers below, but if you don’t mind last-gen stuff, you can also find great deals on carrier-unlocked models like the Galaxy S10, Note 10, and similar 2019 flagships.
Apple iPhone deals

The Apple iPhone is the device that brought smartphones into the limelight, and more than a decade later, the series is still going strong. We saw the release of not two, but three new models (an industry trend that has become the norm in recent years) in 2019 with the mid-range iPhone 11, the flagship iPhone 11 Pro, and the up-sized iPhone 11 Pro Max. For 2020, Apple actually released four new flagships — the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and Apple also recently brought back the iPhone SE, (with the second-gen SE representing a great mid-range flagship alternative similar to Google’s Pixel 3a). That makes five new Apple phones for 2020, giving you more options than ever if you’re after a new iPhone.
Unfortunately, Apple iPhone deals can be a little hard to find sometimes. Often, the best way to save hundreds is to either take advantage of a carrier sign-up offer or to simply buy refurbished, but savvy bargain-hunters can still find prepaid or unlocked iPhone deals on new and slightly older models if they look around. Now is an especially good time to look for deals on recently discontinued devices such as the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, which are great flagships from 2018 that are much cheaper now but not too dated for use as your everyday smartphone.
LG smartphone deals

Sorting through LG’s flagship offerings can be a little confusing due to some odd naming conventions, but there’s no denying that this brand pumps out some very good Android smartphones. Not unlike Samsung, LG has two different flagship lines: The standard G-series devices and the premium V-series phones, both of which now bear LG’s “ThinQ” branding. In 2019, the company added three new devices to the G series stable, the LG G8 ThinQ (the successor to the 2018 G7 ThinQ), and the truly unique dual-screen ThinQ G8x, while the V series saw a refresh in the newer 5G-capable LG V50 ThinQ that succeeded the 2018 V35 ThinQ and LG V40 ThinQ. Even more recently, we saw the LG Velvet and dual-screen LG V60 ThinQ.
LG’s newest offerings didn’t excite us quite as much as others have, but they’re still solid Android devices and are worth it if you can find a good deal — which, with our help, you can. Carriers frequently offer discounts, rebates, and BOGO offers on these premium LG devices, but you can also find some nice unlocked smartphone deals sometimes, even on the latest models. And of course, if you want the best deal on a flagship you can still find new (and not used or refurbished), don’t turn up your nose on slightly older picks like the LG G7 ThinQ or the LG G6.
Google Pixel smartphone deals
Google
Google was late to the hardware game, but given that this software titan is the brain behind the Android operating system, it’s no surprise that its Pixel phones deliver what might be the best out-of-the-box Android experience to be found in a mobile device. In contrast to decade-old devices like the iPhone or Galaxy, Google’s Pixel devices are currently only in their fifth generation. The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL were released last fall, bringing with them some notable improvements like fully metal-and-glass construction (ditching the partially plastic backside of previous models) along with a new three-lens camera module. These were followed by the shockingly cheap Pixel 4a and the new fifth-gen flagship, the Google Pixel 5.
These flagship smartphones are affordable compared to the competition, too (given that Apple and Samsung are now releasing flagships in the $1,000-plus range). Google’s staggered smartphone release strategy means that we may see a new Pixel 5a next spring, but for now, the sub-$400 Pixel 4a is the one to buy if you want one of these devices on the cheap. Also, while deals on the Pixel 5 might be scarce this early after its launch, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are still worthy buys that can be had for deep discounts now.
Carrier smartphone deals
Cellular service providers regularly offer enticing incentives to get you to switch to their LTE plans. Carrier offers are also often the best way to score deals on new flagships like the iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S20. If you’re looking for a new carrier, you can save a good chunk of change and even score a free device by taking advantage of one of the many smartphone deals that are always available from Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T, although note that these promotions are often given in the form of bill credits rather than regular discounts.

The Apple Watch Series 1, Series 2, and Apple Watch Series 4 were discontinued as well in favor of the Apple Watch Series 5 in 2019. In 2020, during its September event, the Series 6 debuted along with other sought-after products such as the iPhone 12. Now, is the Series 6 worth buying? We think so, the Apple Watch Series 6 is most complete smartwatch you can buy. Starting at $399, the Series 6 measures your blood oxygen levels, features a brighter screen for outside use, and even has a tracking family-tracking feature so you won’t lose each other in a shopping mall or an amusement park, for example. Also, the Series 6’s A13 main processing chip is 20% faster than earlier models.
If you’re not ready to shell out the big bucks, the Apple Watch Series 3 is your best affordable option for an Apple Watch. While it’s three generations old, it’s still one of the top smartwatches on the market and not much different from the Apple Watch Series 4. Tough Gorilla Glass protects the touchscreen face, and the case features military-grade protection from dust, moisture, and impacts.
The Gear S3 also has a rotating bezel you can use to scroll through apps, notifications, and more. Like other options, it wirelessly syncs with your phone, and the S3 also has a heart rate monitor, along with a variety of health-tracking functions. The rugged Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is available for $250 from Amazon and works great for any Samsung lovers out there. And if you’re looking for a cheaper option the renewed Samsung Gear S3 Frontier smartwatch is available for under $200 at Amazon.
Samsung Gear Sport

If you want a fitness watch with a more classic look, on the other hand, check out the excellent Samsung Gear Sport, which helps keep track of your daily activity levels, heart rate, and more. This Samsung smartwatch uses a wide range of tracking sensors to monitor your activity levels, including steps taken closely, calories burned, heart rate, and sleep quality. It can even automatically identify different types of physical activities such as running, swimming, and cycling. The smartwatch is water-resistant at depths of up to 164 feet and features a curved, full-color super AMOLED screen that displays real-time activity stats, along with texts and other alerts, from your iOS or Android smartphone.
Built-in GPS gives you accurate real-time stats as well. The watch features the S Health app, which you can use to set goals, check leaderboards, challenge others to step competitions, and share workout results with just the touch of a button. For a solid and affordable no-frills cheap Fitbit alternative, check out the health-based Garmin Vivosmart HR. This fitness tracker displays steps, distance, calories, and heart rate, along with text, call, email, calendar, and social media alerts. It also has an alarm clock. Easy to use, it reminds you to keep active via a move bar and vibration alert. It even has an integrated barometric altimeter that tracks when you take the stairs and measures your workout intensity so you can monitor your progress against weekly goals. (You won’t be able to make phone calls with this particular model, however.)
