August 20, 2021 (Newswire.com) –
Past Matter, Ingrid Ludt’s first solo exhibition in Boston, consists of work that summary bits and items of the universe to liberate them from the burden of illustration. Colours and types drawn from nature are reworked into play items in elaborate studio video games. The exhibition might be open from Sept. 1 to 26, 2021, with a gap reception on Friday, Sept. 3 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Bromfield Gallery.
The compositions are drawn from items of bark, shell, and different pure ephemera after which fastidiously organized to reply to the rectangle of the canvas. The patterns and geometries of nature’s fragments are pared down and rendered on the canvas. In some circumstances, the universe will be discovered inside a single fragment; in others, the items are assembled so as to unlock some type of secret.
The colours, however, are chosen by randomness and video games: choosing amongst crumpled swatches, assigning colours to cube, and drawing tarot playing cards. Ludt is impressed by the irreverent anarchism of the Dadaists within the early twentieth century, who labored amid struggle and illness, not in contrast to the twenty first century. Ludt’s response, just like the Dadaists earlier than her, is to carry playfulness and probability to the foreground. The lightness and pleasure of the method are palpable within the work, the place the shapes radiate the colours that they have been assigned.
That is the intense enterprise of play: to expel the interior critic, invigorate a creative follow, counteract the cruel realities of the day, and join with the universe. It’s this act of discovery, by each Ludt and the viewer by the work, that connects us to one thing bigger, Past Matter.
